Coalitions in Action: New Coalitions in Iraq Make Headway on Efforts to Curb Rx Drug Abuse and Tobacco Use
Last fall, CADCA began working with local leaders in northern Iraq to build community anti-drug coalitions. Since then, two strong coalitions were formed and they’re already making big changes to local policies and social norms to address the region’s high rate of prescription drug abuse and tobacco use.
After conducting a community assessment and a survey, the Ankawa Coalition – one of two coalitions formed in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan’s region – discovered that 87 percent of pharmacists were not complying with the law, giving out prescription medicines to people who didn’t have a valid prescription from a doctor. In the survey, the coalition learned that while many were turning a blind eye to prescriptions, some tried to comply with the law but found it difficult to discern which prescriptions were valid and which were fake.
Coalitions in Action: Tennessee Coalition Honored for its Youth Rx Prevention Outcomes
After local data showed alarming rates of prescription drug abuse among youth in their community, the Coffee County Anti-Drug Coalition serving Coffee County, Tenn. put into action a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem that resulted in major results. A key to their success was engaging physicians and other medical professionals.
The coalition’s successful efforts to reduce youth prescription drug abuse helped them win CADCA’s 2013 GOT OUTCOMES! Coalition of Excellence Award in the Coalition In Focus category. They received their award onstage during the Awards Luncheon at CADCA’s 2014 National Leadership Forum in February. The coalition also presented a workshop and Ideas Fair exhibit along with the other honorees.
Coalitions in Action: Arizona Coalition Receives CADCA Award for Reducing Two Substances in their Community
As a past GOT OUTCOMES! Coalitions of Excellence award winner in the Milestones category, CADCA-member coalition MATFORCE could have sat on their laurels. Instead, they continued to work on their Yavapai Valley, Ariz. substance abuse problems, implementing comprehensive evidence-based strategies along the way. Their hard work paid off once again.

They received their award onstage during the Awards Luncheon at CADCA’s 2014 National Leadership Forum last month.
